The trend is beautiful:
In the U.S., e-retailers accounted for 44 percent of book purchases by volume in 2012, up from 25 percent in 2010. In the U.K. the rise has been somewhat less dramatic but still significant, up from 25 percent in January-November 2010, to 38 percent in the same period in 2012... BowkerThe iPad, Nook, Kindle and the rest have given us a great tool with which we can help curve the negative effects of deforestation - and not to forget the horrors of paper production.
I personally cannot foresee a total end to the printed word any time soon. Collector's items will very likely be a long lasting vanity - there is one area in which I can never see an ebook taking the place of the hardcover.
Regardless; I very much hope that 'A Dance with Dragons' ends up being the last paper-book I purchase.
